Fashion is a form of expression so where do students of all backgrounds at UW-Madison look to showcase their visions?

Moda Magazine is a publication that focuses on Fashion, Lifestyle, Art and Culture articles. Each semester students work to produce issues and plan UW-Fashion Week.

This organization has created an outlet for students of all majors to learn valuable skills, build a portfolio and camaraderie with peers. Eva Weiland, the Editor in Chief at Moda explains this through her personal experience.

Eva Weiland: This is a really professional level organization where you can get your work published. There’s writers that are there for you to work with, models that are just like at your fingertips, like other photographers to learn from.

All majors are welcome, from biology to engineering and journalism in between, anyone is encouraged to join.

Eva Weiland: I’m actually a business major in marketing management and then I’m getting a certificate in graphic design, so not necessarily like connected to writing or journalism or even fashion, but I’ve really developed my management skills through these positions, leadership, organization, all of those, like those fluffy skills that you hear about their super real and I think that it’s going to translate really well into what I ended up doing in a career.

Students work includes many hours spent planning and executing UW-Fashion Week. This is quite unique to our campus.

Eva Weiland: We have an event every single day during that week that is fashion focus so it’s really the core and the center of like fashion life on campus and in Madison because there aren’t a lot of fashion events that happen in Madison at all for the whole community. So we have student designers from like SOHE who participate like throughout the week and then local businesses and local shops.

Once Friday of Fashion Week comes, participants get to see their hard work applauded.

Eva Weiland: We had 450 seats filled and then hundreds of people or more standing. It’s a night where you can feel like you’re in New York City. It’s really transforming in a wonderful experience.

The work UW fashion students are executing does not go unnoticed. It shows in their drive and passion.
